Finding Your Brand’s Voice
A ‘How To’ Guide
You’ve developed your brand – but have you created a strong brand voice?
If you are thinking this is unimportant, think again. Study after study throughout the years concludes that consumers buy products and services from brands they connect to on an emotional level, ignoring brands with whom they don’t.
Here are a few tips from us on how to gain and maintain a strong brand voice:
- 1. If your brand were a person… It is important to find a brand voice that appeals to your target. A brand voice with a target of 15 to 24-year-old sports addicts is going to be dramatically different than a target of 35 to 50-year-old small business owners or 40 to 55 year-year-old insurance agents. Be sure to keep that in mind as you create your brand voice.
To do this most effectively, imagine: If your brand were a person, what would they be like? What would they like or dislike? How would they talk in public? What causes would they stand for? What sort of content would they talk about, share or like? - 2. Create a brand voice style guide. It’s going to be hard to maintain a consistent voice if it isn’t defined. What better way to do that than with a brand voice style guide? In it, define your brand’s values, voice, causes and interests so everyone on staff can keep as consistent as possible.
- 3. Be consistent across all media. If you don’t maintain a consistent brand voice in all you do, especially when navigating between various social media platforms, people are going to notice – and they aren’t going to trust it. Instead, make sure you utilize your newly designed brand voice style guide and stay consistent.
- 4. Start up the idea machine with a little inspiration. Here are some brands that have developed a strong brand voice and utilize it well. Take a look for a little inspiration as you discover your own voice: Charmin, GE, Popchips, Oracle Business Analytics and Manhattan Mini Storage.
